South African born Ingemar Cressey offers over 28 years of surfing experience across international waters, and over 20 years experience as a Surf Coach. Surfing since the age of 9, after a run of successful wins at local Grommet contests he was picked up by Billabong at just 11 years old, securing a 5 year sponsorship deal with them, representing his province as part of the Border team annually from this time.
In 1991 Ingemar became South African Champion for under 14's and found local fame as the youngest competitor to secure entry to the
Billabong Pro in 1993. At age 15 his achievements reached new heights, representing his country as a member of the South African Junior Surfing Team, competing in the infamous Jeffrey's Bay. The following year he was competing in Brazil as part of the South African Schools Team. Most recently Ingemar has competed on the BPSA UK Pro Surf Tour, and Welsh National Surf Championships all of which has provided him with excellent experience to support surfers looking to develop their competitive skills.
In June 2012 Ingemar became a Welsh National Surfing Champion, taking the Seniors title at Freshwater West. He repeated this win, retaining the Welsh National Senior Championship title in May 2013, then subsequently took a break from competitions to focus on coaching. He most recently won the 2019 Welsh Seniors title again for a third time. During 2014 and 2015 Ingemar became the first Coach of the Welsh National Surfing Squad, taking the newly recognised ISA squad to their first and second entry into the World Surfing Championships.
Ingemar stepped down from this role to concentrate on an ongoing partnership with Wave Project Cymru, supporting the delivery of surf courses to young people at risk of or living with mental and emotional health challenges, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
Ingemar is an ASI Qualified (Level 3) Surf Coach - the official qualification required for working as a surf instructor across the world. The course covers all aspects of surf education including surf safety, surfing techniques and group management. Ingemar is also a qualified RLSS National Beach Lifeguard, with experience of working as a Lifeguard in South Africa, Dubai and the Bahamas. He is fully trained in all areas of First Aid, and also holds an Emergency First Response/CPR certificate.
On top of these relevant qualifications for Surf Coaching, Ingemar is a qualified Fitness Instructor (Level 2), and Swimming Instructor (Level 1) which has provided him with an excellent range of coaching skills for ensuring you develop confidence within the water and on a board, no matter what your age or experience. He holds a valid DBS certificate, and is experienced at working with children and young people as well as older groups. Ingemar also works for Halo and Bridgend County Council as a supervisor for the Hydro Pool at Bridgend Resource Centre, working with adults with high level special needs and disablities and is trained and experienced at teaching both children and adults with special needs and disabilities the joy of surfing, using his skills and experience to help develop a new generation of surfers, and pass on his passion for the waves.
